How many goals should I try to accomplish in one year?

I started creating my list of items for my to do list for the year and I began to wonder how many would be enough that it would be a challenge, but not so many that I'll be majorly stressed out instead of having fun. Then it dawned on me that it would be a lot more interesting if other people made the choice for me! (This is a big deal for me because anyone who knows me, knows that I'm a total control freak!) So, I created a survey based on the weeks of the year. Since I'll still be working full-time, I knew trying to do 365 things would be impossible. Therefore, I went with weeks instead and used multiples of 52 for the survey choices that will have me working to accomplish one, two, or three items on the list each week.

Now, before you all go and click the biggest number (not that I'm trying to influence your vote at all!), let me add that I already have a list of 52 things and just those items will keep me very busy! But I really do want input, so the survey is open until 11:59pm on 12/31/09. On New Year's Day, I will post the number of items that got the most votes. I can't wait to see what the outcome will be!

  1. I am voting on 52 goals. I think this will give you the option to choose how challenging and time consuming those goals will be. It will be a great feeling to accomplish the goals that are most important to you. At the end of next year you can look back and feel a huge sigh of relief that you did it! If you told us some of your goals, maybe we could help decide if you could handle more or less. Just a thought. This sounds very interesting - just like the movie Julie and Julia. I would like to hear about what you would like to accomplish this year - if you don't mind sharing. Good luck! Hope you reach your goals! Tricia

  2. Thank you, Tricia! I do plan to post my list on New Year's Eve. I just wanted to wait until the poll closed so I knew how many items to put on my list. I'm super excited to try to accomplish so many things in the space of a year! Check back soon for the list and thanks for leaving a comment!

  3. So often people fail to plan and then wonder why so little is accomplished. I commend you for setting big goals and planning to accomplish them by knowing what is likely and what is not. Good luck...

  4. Thank you so much, Steven! I wish I had the time and money to do this really big, but I am on a teacher's salary! I really appreciate your kind words!

  5. Peggy,
I can't wait to see your list. I voted for 52 because I already know how stressful a full time teaching job is. I suggest you go with 52 for one year, then decide if you can do more. I finished my Master's two years ago, and am still having trouble trying to relax, and let things go. I think when you work full time, have a family, and are doing grad. school, you get used to every minute being filled with productivity. Don't get your plate overloaded, because destressing is not easy either. Breath deep! HaHa

  6. Lisa,

I agree completely about how hard it is to learn to relax again when you have been running at top speed for so long! Thankfully, it looks like the majority of people who took the survey agree with you! I will be posting my list tonight!

    Thanks,
    Peggy
